Student houses in Canterbury: where to live

Canterbury is home to the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) and UCA. Here's a quick guide to the areas students rent in most — whether you're looking for a whole student house with friends, a single room in a shared house, or a room someone needs a replacement for.

St Dunstan's & London Road

Popular with University of Kent students — a short walk up the hill to campus, with Canterbury West station, pubs and shops on the doorstep. Mostly Victorian terraces split into 4–6 bedroom student houses.

Hales Place

A residential estate right next to the University of Kent campus. Larger family homes converted into shared student houses, often with gardens and parking, and typically good value per room.

Wincheap

South-west of the centre, around 10 minutes' walk to town and close to Canterbury Christ Church University's facilities and Canterbury East station. Lots of terraced houses and good supermarkets nearby.

City centre & Northgate

Ideal for CCCU and UCA students who want to walk everywhere. Rooms in shared houses and flats close to lectures, nightlife and the high street — usually a little more expensive.

Sturry Road & Military Road

East of the centre with frequent buses, close to CCCU's North Holmes campus. A mix of student houses and rooms at competitive rents.

Tips for renting student accommodation in Canterbury

  • Start looking early — the best student houses for September are often let by spring.
  • Compare rent per person per week, and check whether bills are included.
  • Check walking or bus time to your campus, not just the distance.
  • Need to leave your room early? Advertise it as "Looking for a replacement" so another student can take it over.
